Notes

A mechanical contractor license is required for HVAC/refrigeration/mechanical work with a value over $10,000 (labor plus materials) (R.S. 37:2150.1). There is no separate state HVAC technician license; EPA 608 applies federally. A mechanical contractor performing plumbing work over $10,000 must also hold a State Plumbing Board master plumber license. Statewide mechanical, electrical and plumbing contractors are exempt from local competency exams (R.S. 37:2156.1(I)), though local permit fees and occupational license taxes still apply. Statute caps the renewal fee at $100 and the delinquent fee at $50 (R.S. 37:2156(C)); the Board sets the actual amount each July (LAC 46:XXIX.131); the amount due is shown on your renewal notice and in the contractor portal. An additional classification costs $95 per year. The Board adds a $100-per-year construction-education assessment to each renewal (R.S. 37:2156(K)); the renewal form lets the contractor opt out.
