Notes

Maine has no statewide general contractor license; the Attorney General states general contractors and trades such as roofing and framing are not licensed or regulated. A bill to license residential building contractors (LD 1226, contracts over $15,000 from Jan 1, 2027) died on adjournment April 29, 2026 and is not law. Local permits and business licenses vary by town. Home Construction Contracts Act: a written contract is required for home construction or repair costing more than $3,000. Plumbing, electrical and fuel (heating) work still require licensed tradespeople.
