Short answer

Georgia does not issue a state roofing license.

What our research found

Georgia has no state roofing license. The Board's 'Traditional Specialty Contractors' policy statement (under O.C.G.A. 43-41-17) lists Flat Roofing, Sheet Metal Roofing and Shingles and Shakes as specialty trades that do not need a residential or general contractor license when working within the specialty (limited-service list also covers repair/re-roof of existing roofs without structural work for weatherization contractors). Roofing work that includes structural work or general contracting scope above the license threshold requires a Residential/General Contractor license (see those entries). Licensing/registration/business-license requirements are local (city/county) and vary by jurisdiction. A voluntary industry license exists (GARCA) but is not a state license.

Who handles it, per our sources: State Licensing Board for Residential and General Contractors (GA Secretary of State, Professional Licensing Boards Division)

What to check locally

  1. Call the building or permit office of the city or county where the job is. Ask whether it needs a local roofing license or a contractor registration before you pull a permit.
  2. Ask what keeps that local license current: the renewal date, the fee, any bond or insurance certificate, and any continuing education.
  3. Check each city or county you work in on its own. Each one sets its own rules, fees and renewal dates.
  4. Read the notes above for anything the state still requires, such as a business registration, a tax license or a license for related trade work.
