Roofing
Roofing - no state license (none)
No license required
Texas does not issue a state license for this work. Check with your city or county.
Texas does not license or register roofing contractors at the state level. A 2025 bill to have TDLR license reroofing contractors (HB 3344, 89th Legislature) did not pass. Some cities require local registration or permits, for example Houston and Austin. A roofing contractor may not act as a public insurance adjuster or advertise to adjust claims on property where it provides or may provide roofing services (Insurance Code 4102.163). The voluntary RCAT credential is not a state license. Roofers doing solar electrical work need a TDLR electrician license.

General contractor
General Contractor - no state license (none)
No license required
Texas does not issue a state license for this work. Check with your city or county.
Texas has no statewide general contractor or home improvement license. The state builder registration run by the Texas Residential Construction Commission ended when that agency was abolished on September 1, 2009. Licensing or registration, where required, is set by each city. HVAC, electrical and plumbing work is state-licensed as listed above.
